Unfortunately it was announced earlier in March that Mossman Mill would be closing down after 126 years of operation from 1897-2023 after months of rumours and official talks were held to attempt to secure a future for the mill. Things started looking up just over a month ago when the Queensland state government provided $12,000,000 AUD to the mill which even piqued the interest of a potential buyer; however unfortunately the buyer decided not to purchase the mill to continue it's service and the mill has entered liquidation with it's assets being sold off to interest parties.

If you are unaware Mossman Mill is a sugarcane crushing mill owned by Far Northern Milling and located in the Far North region of Queensland, Australia and it operates a relatively small 2ft railway network with a small fleet of trains as well compared to other Queensland sugar mills. For sugarcane train enthusiasts it is most known for it's unique "canetainer" type of 10 tonne sugarcane bin that is in widespread use on Mossman Mill's operations that other mills do not use. These canetainers as well as the mills own variation of the more modern 10 tonne cane bins like those used by other mills still differ quite a lot from those other mills as the cane bins used in Mossman are not fixed to the wagons frame and instead can be lifted on and off by crane or loaded and unloaded onto a flat wagon by trucks. These flat wagons can also carry any other compatible mill equipment such as maintenance related wagons. It's network is also quite scenic.

It is most important to note that due to the mill's closure it gives the town of Mossman itself an uncertain future too as the area is mostly populated by mill workers and farmers; the town is essentially there to service the mill and passers by but not much else. The mill itself is also a sort of tourist attraction for Mossman as well and with the closure tourists to Mossman will also likely be lost by a large amount.

As a tribute to the mill I have put together the best operations of the mill that I have been able to capture from 2022 and 2023. It's a big shame this mill will be shutting down. I wish good luck to the workers, farmers and general residents of Mossman in the future to come.
