We continue with our exploration of P.W. Joyce's A Social History of Ancient Ireland, this week looking at the Monastic Schools and the flourishing of learning in early Ireland. In particular, we examine the important role of both the Monastic Schools and Bardic Schools in early learning and education, and the extraordinary fact that Ireland was a centre of learning in the first millennium AD, attracting students from all over Europe, giving rise to the name the 'Island of Saints and Scholars'.
