Prior to the establishment of the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek, there existed Starfleet, which was an organization that was founded in the 2130s and was located on Earth. Its responsibilities included deep space exploration and military duty. A number of space agencies that were situated on Earth, including as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the International Space Agency, were supplanted by Starfleet. The Federation was established by Earth in the year 2161, thirty years after it had been established, with the support of its friends Vulcan, Tellar Prime, and the Anderrian Empire. With the intention of protecting itself from extraterrestrial dangers like the Romulan Empire, the Federation set out to defend itself.
