The Strait of Messina is all that separates the Italian mainland from Sicily. The waterway is only 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, and since Sicily is Italy’s largest territory aside from ‘the boot,’ it seems odd that no direct connection exists between the island and the mainland. There are several reasons for this, including lack of funds, geographic concerns, and, like so many other things in Italy, the mafia. But recent plans by the Italian government may change all of this by constructing what would become the world’s longest, tallest, and most destructive suspension bridge. Today we'll take a closer look at these issues, and explain why the planned bridge to Sicily is destined to fail.
