I’ve never been real keen on pulling an anchor up by hand. Big boats come with a winch and that was great when I had one but until recently, they didn’t make them for small boats, or at least not as small as I owned.

The Haines I owned just before this one was too small for any of the winches, I have seen on the market which was a great pity because it was also too small for someone who if 6’2” to crawl through the cabin comfortably. I tried climbing around the outside once but if anything, that was worse.

When my wife said we needed a bigger boat I started looking for something in the 6m to 7m range and having an anchor winch was at the top of my list. The boat I got didn’t have a lot of the things that were on my list, but the price allowed me to fit them and that is what I have been slowly doing for a few months now.

I picked up a Lonestar GX2 anchor winch at the boat show. If you have never attended a boat show I highly recommend doing so if you are in the market for anything. The specials on offer can save you a heap of cash. If you need something and can’t make it to a boat show or can’t wait for one then buying online is often cheaper then going into the shops.
