Tragedy of South Korea Lotto winner / YTN | 242억 로또 당첨자의 비극 [정유진, 사회부 기자 ·최창호, 여의도메타포럼 대표]

This little piece of paper|in my hand is a lottery ticket.
I'm sure that many of you have|bought a ticket at least once.
But what are the odds that you will win?
It's 1 in 8.14 million.
This is smaller than the odds that|you will be struck by lightning.
There are many cases where a lottery win|led to unhappiness instead of happiness.
This is the story of|a 24.2 billion won lottery winner
who became a fraud after|squandering his prize money.
Winning 1st prize in the lottery|is the dream of many.
But if you hear the stories of past winners,|tragic follows most lottery wins.
Today, we will discuss this topic
with local reporter Jeong Yu-jin and|psychology expert Dr. Choi Chang-ho.
Thank you for coming.
Thank you for having us.
The first question's for you, reporter Jeong.
The anchor said the 1st prize winner|became a fraud.
How did this happen?
The winner was one Mr. Kim, aged 52.
Kim was a small-time investor in|the stock market who earned a small income.
In May 2003, he won 1st prize|in the lottery and hit the jackpot.
There were two 1st prize winners at that time|and each received 24.2 billion won.
It was 18.9 billion won after tax and|the 2nd largest prize in the lottery's history.
Kim thought that his life would be|turned upside down.
It was, but in an unexpected way,|and he ended up being caught by the police.
He lost all his money within 5 years|and became a fraud.
I see.
18.9 billion won is a lot of money.
For most people, it's an unimaginable sum.
How did he lose all that money?
He didn't know how to spend it|since he wasn't used to having that much.
He didn't tell anyone about his lottery win,
so he couldn't ask anyone for advice|about how to manage the money.
Eventually, he invested large sums in stocks|with no particular investment plan.
He also bought 2 apartment flats in|the Gangnam area for about 3 to 4 billion won
and he invested in the construction|of a hospital on his friend's recommendation.
Since he didn't create any documents|related to his investments,
he couldn't recover his money.
The police reported that Kim had no professional|certifications related to stock investment.
His investments failed|due to his rash investment decisions.
He squandered all his prize money|in only 5 years, at the end of 2008.
As mentioned, we have psychologist|expert Dr. Choi Chang-ho with us today.
18.9 billion won is|an unimaginable sum of money...(ellipsis)
