Hey guys! Welcome back to the studio! This week I'm gonna be teaching you two absolutely essential skills: building solos with short phrases and comping for yourself.

Good solos aren't made just from super long bebop lines. Sometimes, a more musical approach is playing ideas that are shorter and play with the concept of "call and response." We can still use all of our bebop language, but in shorter bursts of varying lengths to leave space for the harmony to breathe.

In those spaces, we can continue to be active players, especially if we're the only chordal instrument on the band stand. When we play with more space, and use shorter phrases, we should really inject some sparse chord comping and I'll show you how to do this as well!

If you like what you saw here, don't forget to subscribe to the channel and hit the bell for notifications. I upload new lessons every Sunday so keep your eye on this space. Thanks for stopping by!
