Connectome 4a - 40,000 flies running the arms of my soul, singing...
Composed by Ken Topham (2023)

Performed by City Of Tomorrow
Elis Blatchford - flute
Stuart Breczinski - oboe
Leander Star - horn
Nanci Belmont - bassoon
Rane Moore - clarinet

This piece is like a play or maybe a documentary, but not quite. The instruments are definitely characters. Each has a distinct personality and identity, sometimes. Each instrument maybe has a life outside of this piece of music. They are playing this music together. There are times when they are removed from the piece and are having a conversation about the performance in progress. Also, sometimes the instruments transcend their physical forms and become amorphous clouds of energy whose vibrations might swirl or clash and then ultimately disintegrate. This piece exhibits a nonlinear chronology. The sections are like transparency sheets stacked on an overhead projector. The scenes are occurring simultaneously at different times and places. However, we can only observe slices of each of them at a time.
