The demands of digitalization, subsequently changing business processes, client needs, markets, and therefore also products and services, require enormous efforts from companies around the world. The term of the moment - continuous disruption – summarizes well this aggressive call and differentiates it from the former soft-spoken “change”. These now rather “deep” changes affect people on several levels, from cognitive to emotional, and affect workers and the C-level suite.

Artificial intelligence, which goes far beyond the digitalization of business processes, adds an extra layer of complexity. We do not yet know how far this intelligence will reach and to what extent it will be able and allowed to replace humans. Not only technical but also ethical questions remain unanswered for now. These developments instill in people a cocktail of curiosity and innovativeness but also more unpleasant emotions of uncertainty and fear. Most people will have to leave their comfort zones to survive psychologically in the new world.

The task of today’s leaders is to curiously, courageously, and cautiously accompany this process - in and for their organizations and with their co-workers. Facing artificial intelligence, it seems to be important to make the best use of our specific human intelligence which is our human USP – and which AI cannot yet cover, maybe never will. Therefore, leaders need to understand the emotional leadership demands of today’s times to foster these human(e) capabilities. Many of their own and their co-workers’ emotional reactions happen underneath the surface, in the hidden of the unconscious – yet they influence thinking and acting as well. In my talk, I propose an approach called “leadership with depth” to deal with unconscious and emotional challenges. I will share how they impact us, why they endanger constructive work, and what leaders need to do to master them.
