Coming Out

They had no idea of the barrel
of festering maggots that question
represented. They didn’t clock
the irony of interrogating me
during Religious Education.

Perhaps, if they had quizzed me during English
I could have stood upon my desk
and poetically declared my unrequited
love for another girl.

Maybe, if they had probed me during Science,
I could have made the teacher
answer with a technical explanation
about how bees sometimes prefer other bees.

They should have quizzed me in Marhs.
I would have used algebra
to show how (y + y) - x = happiness.

The rumour was too tasty a titbit;
they couldn’t wait, they insisted
they had a right to know;
PE was in the afternoon, see.

So I muttered yes,
because I cannot lie
and I sort-of-was, sort-of-am.
