📍Vlog Location:
We visited the famous Karato Ichiba fish market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi in Japan which is famous for its pufferfish. In fact, they’re supposed to bring consumers good luck (in the local dialect, they are called “ふく, fuku”, which is also the word for “fortune” or “luck”, instead of the common Japanese word for pufferfish, “ふぐ, fugu”). They are, however, known internationally as being the world’s most deadly fish as their skin, intestines, eyes, kidneys, liver, and ovaries are highly poisonous and it is illegal to eat them in most parts of the world. Even in Japan, the pufferfish eating ban was only recently lifted in the 19th century by the Japanese Prime Minister and there are apparently somewhere between 20-40 cases of poisoning each year.. so you have to have good “fuku” to eat them safely!

All jokes aside, Japanese pufferfish / blowfish chefs are certified by the Japanese government and trained at what they do so they can remove the poisonous part of these deadly fish before customers eat them. (Viewers should of course be careful though because unless it is prepared by a professional, the toxins can spread to the flesh of the fish, so you should only eat puffer fish in places where it is prepared by a qualified fugu handler!)

The fish market stalls are lined with fresh, ultra thin fugu sashimi (called “Tessa”) and you can also see the raw fish that has gutted so you can rest assured you’ll be lucky and that the first time eating pufferfish in Japan won’t be your last! The question is, though, what will our reaction be to eating this famously dangerous fish?? 🐡
