UNC didn't have the services of star guard RJ Davis, but his absence and an early deficit didn't deter what became an 84-76 defeat of Memphis in this a charity exhibition game at FedEx Forum.

Seth Trimble poured in 33 points and Jalen Washington added 17 points, as the Tar Heels ran out to several double-digit leads during the second half. Trimble buried a corner 3-pointer set up by Drake Powell's drive and dish, and Carolina led 72-58 with about eight minutes remaining. Later, the Tar Heels went ahead 76-61 in the final 6½ minutes.

Elliot Cadeau scored 11 points, handed out 13 assists and swiped four steals. UNC, ranked No. 9 in the new preseason AP Top 25 poll, held Davis out of the game for precautionary reasons. Davis, the reigning ACC Player of the Year and consensus first-team All-American, suffered a lower-back contusion three days prior, after taking a hard fall in the team's Blue-White scrimmage game.

Transfer forward Ty Claude wasn't in uniform for the Tar Heels on Tuesday night, either, and a team spokesman had no explanation on his status prior to tip-off. But no matter on this night in this early tuneup, the inaugural Hoops for St. Jude Tip-Off Classic benefitting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

UNC turned its 39-36 halftime deficit into a hustling exhibition victory. Coming out of a timeout with 11:55 left, the 6-foot-10 Washington curled from the paint out to the wing and nailed a 3-pointer on the inbounds pass, giving Carolina a 59-49 lead.

The Tar Heels used a starting lineup with Cadeau and Trimble in the backcourt, alongside Cade Tyson, Jae'Lyn Withers and Washington.

PJ Haggety's 24 points topped Memphis, which is under coach Penny Hardaway. These Tigers were picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference, behind preseason favorite UAB.
