We're back with a bit of a quick one this week! I get asked a lot by students about how I developed my comping, so today I'm gonna show you guys some ways in which I inject motion into my chord accompaniment.
In addition to using various harmonic concepts we've gone over like Barry's 6 diminished scales, the dominant family, and others, we can also just focus our approach on using good voice leading to cut a smooth route through chord changes. I'll start by showing you guys a couple of ways I like to navigate through a ii-V-I progression in the key of C using smooth voice leading. I'll explain the chord substitutions I use so you can try using them in you're own accompaniments. Then, I'll show you how to use hybrid picking, along with notes from the parent scales of the chord substitutions from the first section to add some interesting motion to what were previously static chord grips. Finally, we'll wrap things up by checking out a "comping etude" I wrote for you guys over the changes to the standard "I Should Care." Through learning this one you'll be able to see how I take the approach I detailed earlier in the video through an entire set of chords.
