Pete Lockett is your guide into the wonderful world of bongos – here, he demonstrates different techniques to get you started.
They are extremely versatile, cut right through on top of a track, can be used as a rhythm or as a solo instrument and have a great range of different techniques and styles to draw on from all over the world.

They are found, in one guise or another, in Indian, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Arabic, jazz, pop, rock and classical music – and more!
They are the most qualified of the ‘under-exposed’ percussion instruments easily available to the modern player.
Admittedly, at first glance there are a few techniques and muting techniques that might appear more complicated than the djembe or cajon, but, like any instrument, there is a whole line of simple techniques that can be used very effectively straight away...

Examples and further information are in Issue 299 (available from March 2021) of Rhythm Magazine.
