It’s November 2004 and George W Bush has just defeated John Kerry to earn another four years as the president of the United States. It’s not as close as the 2000 election but what’s interesting is that it’s an election that continues a paradoxical trend that has persisted throughout the US presidential elections for decades.

In the United States, richer voters are more likely to vote Republican. Richer states, on the other hand, are more likely to vote Democrat. This income and voting paradox that has confused voters and election watchers for decades, causing issues in how voters perceive both parties.

By uncovering how income affects voting both within and between states, only then will we understand how this paradox is able to exist.
