When I was about 10 years old, my family was going through some major changes. After the death of my stepfather, my mother faced her own set of challenges. During that time, I often sought solace in nature. I’d escape to the rivers, lakes, and streams, spending my days exploring new fishing spots or wandering the woods with my dog. These experiences fostered a deep love for country living that would shape my life later on.

As a member of our Nation’s military, I had the unique opportunity to live off-base. I chose a quaint farm cottage in Spain, just outside the Naval Air Station in Rota. At night, I would sit on my rooftop patio, watching farmers at work and aircraft taking off from the base. The tranquility of the countryside combined with the rhythm of military life left a lasting impression on me.

Now, in my later years, I’ve traded the deserts of Arizona for a peaceful 5-acre lot in Maine. Whether by fate or circumstance, I now find myself surrounded by nature—near the sea, with vast woods and gardens to tend. These days, I spend my time planting, cultivating gardens, and building a walking park for me and my dogs. I feel blessed to be able to enjoy these simple pleasures for the rest of my life, however long that may be.
