Synology offers a RAID alternative, SHR, which operates slightly different than a standard RAID. It allows for you to grow an array overtime with disks of different sizes while still getting an increased storage capacity. SHR is simple, there are two types SHR1 and SHR2. SHR1 gives you one disk fault tolerance, SHR2 gives you two disks of fault tolerance. No need to research which RAID level is best, SHR takes care of all of it for you.

SHR works by creating virtual groups of RAIDs on the disks in order to get the maximum amount of storage out of your disks. In this video we go over how SHR works when compared to RAID and some of the advantages / disadvantages of choosing it.
