Thingnam Anjulika
Common name: Cockscomb • Hindi: Lalmurga लाल मुर्ग़ा • Manipuri: ꯍꯥꯑꯣꯂꯩ Haolei • Tamil: கோழிப்பூ Kozhi poo
Botanical name: Celosia cristata Family: Amaranthaceae (Amaranth family)
Synonyms: Celosia argentea var. cristata, Celosia pyramidalis, Celosia aurea
Cockscomb is an annual herb and is very common as a garden plant. The tightly clustered blooms are said to resemble a rooster's comb, thus the common name "cockscomb". Flower colors include red, yellow, orange, gold, and pink. The celosias or cockscombs are erect, branching plants with oval or lance-shaped, strongly veined leaves 2-6 in (5.1-15.2 cm) long and hundreds of tiny flowers packed in dense, brightly colored flowerheads which usually stand above the foliage. The Cristata cultivars are good in containers, and prized for Japanese flower arrangements. In south India, cockscombs are used extensively for the Onam "Pookkalam". The origin of this plant is uncertain.

Cockscomb, (Celosia cristata), common garden plant of the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). Cockscombs are tender perennials but are usually grown as annuals in cooler climates. The plants produce dense undulating inflorescences that resemble the red combs on the heads of roosters, hence their common name; the colours range from white and yellow to shades of orange, red, and purple. The flowers can be dried and used in floral arrangements.
