In this video I break down a Peek-A-Boo Footwork technique that Mike Tyson used often. This is a great tactic for short guys to use

This peek a boo footwork technique is called the L step. And even though it is a basic technique you can use it to give yourself a huge advantage in the ring.

Mike Tyson would use this technique when fighting guys who like to box, use the jab and circle to their left. Guys like Larry Holmes, Tyrell Biggs, Henry Tillman and others. And what this footwork technique does is, it cut's them off as they're trying to circle to their left.

This means they now have to circle to their right but if you're a boxing fan and you've watched guys with great jabs like Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes, you'll know that circling to the left is part of the reason why they are able to be so effective with that jab.

So when you take that away from them with this L-step, you've now taken their greatest weapon away from them!

Now this technique is not specific to the Peekaboo boxing style but it is a tactic that shorter guys can use effectively against taller opponents to slow their movement and take away their game plan.

The way to perform this subtle tactic is to do a hop step, replacing your back foot with your front foot, then shuffling to the right and resetting your stance. That's all it is! If you need to, you can do a double shuffle to get around further and really cut off your opponent.

This was one of Mike Tyson's main footwork techniques for confusing taller opponents and taking them off their game plan. I'm not sure if Cus D'amato invented this footwork but it was definitely drilled in to Tyson as we can see him practicing this move on the heavy bag and in shadow boxing.

So start practicing this footwork in training, when you're hitting the heavy bag, when you're hitting the mitts and even in shadow boxing, you want to make this footwork a habit so that it comes naturally when sparring and fighting.
