프랑스 남부 프로방스 지방 (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur)의 ‘보뀔루즈’ (Vaucluse) 지역에 위치한 인구 약 9백명의 작은 마을로 북쪽으로 이어지는 넓은 포도원이 펼쳐치는 곳을 내려다보고 있는 언덕을 따라 회색 석조구조의 전통 가옥들이 늘어선 곳으로 신석기 시대부터 인류가 정착하였고, 16새기에 건립된 난공불락의 요새가 남아있다. 프로방스 ‘뤼베롱’ (Luberon) 산맥 부근은 유명 트러플 산지이자 와인 산지이다.

프랑스인들 보다도 더 프로방스 지방을 사랑한 영국인 카피라이터 출신 ‘피터 메일’의 1989년 수필집 베스트 셀러 "프로방스에서의 1년"의 배경이 되었던 곳이자, 아티스트들이 사랑한 마을로 잘 알려져 있다. 특히 화가 ‘니콜라 드 스타엘’(Nicolas de Staël)과 사진작가이자 ‘피카소’의 연인이었던 ‘도라 마르’(Dora Maar)가 이곳에 머물며 수 많은 예술가들을 초청했기에 지금도 마을 곳곳에 예술작품들이 놓여져 있다. ‘피카소’가 선물한 그림을 팔아서 이 집을 구입한 것으로 유명하다.

아름다운 오래된 집과 마을을 가로지르는 좁은 골목길, ‘프랑스의 가장 아름다운 마을들’ (Les plus beaux villages de France) 159개 중에 하나인 곳으로, 16세기 프랑스 종교전쟁 기간에 개신교 위그노파 사람들이 구교도들에 의해 15개월 동안 포위되었던 요새 마을이다.

Located in the Vaucluse region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in southern France, this small village with a population of about 900 people is lined with traditional houses made of gray stone along a hill overlooking a wide vineyard extending to the north. Humans have settled here since the Neolithic Age, and an impregnable fortress built in the 16th century still remains. The Luberon mountain range in Provence is a famous truffle and wine producing region.

It is well known as a village loved by artists, and was the setting for the 1989 best-selling essay collection "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mail, a British copywriter who loved Provence more than the French. In particular, the painter Nicolas de Staël and the photographer and Picasso's lover Dora Maar stayed here and invited many artists, so there are still works of art displayed throughout the village. It is famous for selling the paintings that Picasso gave it and purchasing this house.

Beautiful old houses and narrow alleys that run through the village, it is one of the 159 'Most Beautiful Villages in France' (Les plus beaux villages de France), a fortress village where the Protestant Huguenots were besieged by the Catholics for 15 months during the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century.
